A wheat reaper machine is a walk-behind harvester that cuts standing wheat near the ground and lays the stems in a neat row (a windrow) for drying and threshing. Wheat is a rabi crop. The harvest moves from central and western India in February up to Punjab and Haryana in April.

Wheat left standing after it is ready lodges in pre-monsoon wind and rain, and lodged crop is slow and lossy to cut. Owning the reaper means cutting on day one.
